The decision to have thermal design work done by a manufacturer can jeopardize your product design cycle as well as the overall functionality of the thermal solution. When a customer decides to let a heat sink manufacturer provide a thermal design solution, the customer will be steered into what is known as a “leveraged design”. The heat sink manufacturer will try to push the customer into a design that provides them with the highest margin on production units. The heat sink manufacturer will accomplish this by using existing designs and tooling from other customer designs. In doing so, the customer is provided with an inferior product not truly designed for the specific application. The heat sink manufacturer is motivated to maximize its margins in production, and is willing to heavily discount the upfront thermal design and analysis in exchange for production orders.

Time after time, we have seen applications where the original thermal design created by a manufacturer is not properly done, causing thermal issues and production problems down the road, where design changes are extremely costly and cause delays for market release.
